Barcelona transfer news: Frenkie de Jong set to complete £79m deal after rejecting PSG

The 21-year-old Dutchman has been linked to several clubs across Europe, including Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, but it appears Barcelona will be the next destination for the young prospect.

The Catalan giants are reportedly offering De Jong a bumper wage deal, which amounts to £14million (€16m) a year.

Barca are willing to offer De Jong a basic salary of £8.77m (€10m) per season, with the chance of earning an additional £5.26m (€6m) in bonuses based on appearances and silverware.

The versatile midfield has been linked with a move away from Ajax in the summer, but at the time De Jong had expressed a desire to continue playing in the Netherlands after Ajax had secured Champions League football.

The fact the deal is going through in the January window and not in the summer will surprise some Ajax fans, especially after club CEO Edwin Van Der Sar previously said it wouldn’t happen now.

“We’re not going to sell a player halfway through the season,” the former Manchester United goalkeeper said.

“No way. If you have financial difficulties you might look at it, but for us no.”

De Jong has made 16 league appearances for Ajax this season and has three goals to his name.

At one point he appeared close to finalising a move to the French capital, but has now rejected a move to PSG and decided to join Barcelona instead.

According to Barcelona public radio Catalunya, De Jong’s agent has contacted the other clubs interested in the player to tell them he is going to accept Barca’s offer.

The deal is expected to be finalised on Wednesday after the player’s representatives meet with Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu in Amsterdam.

Barcelona are expected to pay a transfer fee close to £79m (€90m) for De Jong.

This would make him the most expensive Dutch player in history, as it would eclipse the £75m Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk a year ago.
