The 30-year-old former JLS star lost to Mollie King, 31, in the dance off on Strictly Come Dancing 2017, meaning he and his professional partner Janette Manrara, 35, were sent home in an elimination which shook the fans and judges. Last night, the duo were reunited for the Christmas special as they returned to the dance floor in a bid to redeem themselves. The festive instalment saw Aston Merrygold and Janette crowned the champions and he has since admitted it “makes up” for last year’s disaster. “This makes up for it, 100 per cent,” he told the Daily Record.
“I’m one of those people who thinks everything happens for a reason,” he continued.
“I just feel like if I’d got further in the show, I might not have done the Christmas special and been able to win it.
“So this is why I had to leave the show then, to come back and be able to prove myself really, that I could actually do it,” he added.
Janette called the Strictly victory a “dream come true” on the show last night.

The pair topped the leaderboard with an incredible 40 points from the judges for their energetic Jive.
Head judge Shirley Ballas, 57, praised: “You managed to melt all the ice. You brought magic to Christmas.”
Aston and Janette were delighted to come back in style after being eliminated just seven weeks into the competition last year, despite being some of the frontrunners of the series.
They went up against Mollie and her partner AJ Pritchard, 24, in the dance off after failing to impress the judges with his Viennese Waltz.
Both Darcey Bussell, 49, and Bruno Tonioli, 63, opted to save Aston and Janette, but the remaining two judges cast their votes against them.
Having scored the dance a measly four points, Craig Revel Horwood, 53, chose to save Mollie and AJ and Shirley, as head judge, sealed their fate.
Aston recently hit out at Craig, telling Metro: “Craig gave me a four. Can he justify that? Not really, I don’t think so personally.
“Anton [Du Beke] and Ruth [Langsford] got a four from him and they fell over in their routine and ended up on the floor.
“Was my routine bad enough that it matched with someone who had fallen over?” he added.
Blasting the lack of consistency, Aston said: “With respect, maybe think about the score a little more.”
