US faces massive ‘SHUTDOWN’ over border wall funding row – ‘NOTHING we can do about it!’

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday morning, Trump said: “We’re going to have a shutdown, there’s nothing we can do about that, because we need the Democrats to give us their votes.” Shortly after 8pm local time (1am GMT) the US Senate adjourned making a shutdown inevitable. This will begin at 12am local time (5am GMT).

Certain government agencies will stop receiving funding, and will immediately cease operations.

In the Senate the Republicans control 51 seats, giving them a tiny majority, so needed the support of nine Democrats to advance the legislation which they did not receive.

The controversial bill would have provided $5billion (£3.9billion) for the funding of President Trump’s planned border wall.

The bill did pass the House of Representatives, the second chamber of the US Congress, on Tuesday.

Unlike the Senate Republicans have a significant majority in the House.

Jeff Flake, Republican Senator from Arizona, commented: “There is no path forward for the House bill.

“The only path forward is to a bill that has an agreement between the president and both houses of Congress.”

Negotiations are expected to continue between the White House and Congressional leaders to break the deadlock.

On Friday afternoon Trump tweeted: “Shutdown today if Democrats do not vote for border security!”

The US government shut down for three days between January 20 and 23, and for a matter of hours on February 9, due to funding disputes between the White House and Senate.

In 2013, during the Obama Presidency, it closed down for 16 days during which period 800,000 workers were sent home.
