That’s according to club legend Sammy McIlroy who thinks a return to the Bernabeu beckons for the Portuguese.
A beleaguered Mourinho finally got the boot on Tuesday after weeks of speculation.
United slumped to a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday which prompted Ed Woodward to take action.

The 55-year-old had a stint managing Real from 2010-2013 and McIlroy thinks Florentino Perez might snap him up.

Santiago Solari is currently leading Los Blancos, but hasn’t looked wholly convincing in his first top-flight job.
“You never know in football management these days,” McIlroy told LoveSport Radio.
“Mourinho has been a great manager in his time.
“You can’t take away the trophies that he’s won.
“A lot of people questioned his style of play because he just likes to win, no matter how he wins.
“But you can’t take his record away.
“He’s been very, very successful. I loved his appointment.
“I thought he was going to come in full of beans and excite everyone and get everyone going with that cheeky nature that he had before with his other clubs.
“But unfortunately we haven’t seen any of that at Manchester United even thought we won the Europa League and the League Cup.
“I thought he was going to kick on from there but it went backwards.
“This happens in football but I wouldn’t say Jose Mourinho is finished and the way it’s going at Real Madrid, I wouldn’t be surprised if he finished up there.”
United now face a battle to secure a top-four finish following their humbling to the Reds.
They face Cardiff in the Premier League on Saturday and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who previously had an ill-fated stint in charge of the Bluebirds – has been appointed United’s caretaker manager until the end of the season.
McIlroy reckons a huge rebuilding job at Old Trafford is needed.
“We shouldn’t be 19 points behind Liverpool or behind Manchester City the way we are,” he added.
“To be 11 points from the top four for Manchester United is unacceptable.
“So whoever does come in has an unbelievable job to do.
“But I honestly think if he can pick up this squad – whoever it is – these players are better than they’re showing.
“And then we wait until the summer and see if we’re going to recruit some more players.
“Years ago, clubs were chasing Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson.
“Now we’re chasing not just Manchester City but a number of clubs as well, which is hard to accept for a Manchester United supporter.”
