Mr Bush served as the 41st US president between 1989 and 1993, and oversaw the first Gulf War. The former Republican leader died at home, eight months after his wife Barbara passed away at the age of 92. The US flag was lowered to half mast at the White House after his son, former US president George Bush Jnr, announced his father had died at 4.10am GMT yesterday.
President Donald Trump, currently attending the G20 conference in Argentina, said in a joint statement with his wife Melania: “Through his essential authenticity, disarming wit, and unwavering commitment to faith, family, and country, president Bush inspired generations of his fellow Americans to public service – to be, in his words, ‘a thousand points of light’ illuminating the greatness, hope, and opportunity of America to the world.”
The last Soviet-era leader Mikhail Gorbachev, 87, hailed Mr Bush Snr’s contribution to ending the Cold War and their nations’ nuclear arms race. He said: “I pay tribute to George Bush’s contribution towards this historic achievement. He was a genuine partner.”
The Queen also remembered him fondly.
In a message to Mr Trump she said: “President Bush was a great friend and ally of the UK. Prince Philip and I remember our days in Texas in 1991 with great fondness.

George Bush Jnr said in a statement his father was “a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for”.
In April, Mr Bush Snr was admitted to hospital with a blood infection but was discharged. He was also being treated for a form of Parkinson’s disease.
