NBA news: Russell Westbrook makes huge triple-double admission as he eyes Magic Johnson

The Oklahoma City Thunder star had a monstrous night with 23 points on 10-of-17 shooting, 19 rebounds and 15 assists in a 100-83 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That moved the Thunder to 13-7 for the season with OKC sat in fourth in a tightly-contested Western Conference.

But the bigger story of the night was the significance of 2017 MVP Westbrook’s triple-dub.

Westbrook’s big night at both ends saw him notch his 107th career triple-double – as many as the great Jason Kidd managed.

That was in just his 760th game, whereas it took 1,247 games for Kidd to reach the same number.

It was the 30-year-old guard’s third triple-double of the season having averaged 23.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists this year.

That is just shy of averaging a triple-double across the year – having become the only player to average such a feat across two entire seasons in the league last year.

He has the third most in NBA history with Oscar Robertson leading the way with 181 but Russ is now just 32 away from passing Los Angeles Lakers icon Magic Johnson to go second.

Johnson took 906 games to reach his landmark – though Westbrook’s current consistency means he could well surpass the Lakers’ current president of basketball operations in even less games.

LeBron James is the second-best active player in the league with 74 triple-doubles while James Harden is ninth in the all-time list on 36.

Speaking after drawing level with Kidd, Westbrook could barely believe his achievement.

He declared to reporters: “I am extremely blessed and humbled to be able to go out and play and compete in the NBA in itself.

“Just to be named with Jason Kidd and Magic and those guys, I could never dream [of it].

“I dreamt about even sitting here talking to you guys so I sink everything in and never take anything for granted.

“Like I’ve told you guys many times before, good or bad nights, I do whatever I can, whatever my team needs at the time and that’s what I do.”

OKC coach Billy Donovan suggested that Westbrook’s numbers might have been even better had his team been more efficient with their shooting.

He said in a press conference: “There were some mismatches that Russell exploited and that got us back in the game where he really passed the ball out of the post. He was reading the game, reading the floor.

“He was able to make some plays, that was important. Everything he did tonight flowed out of our offense where the floor was spaced correctly.

“It gave him opportunities on double teams to make some reads. He did an incredible job organising and running the offense.

“Guys were in really good spots, the floor was spaced really well and I thought our ball movement was really good.

“We didn’t shoot it well but it was just one of those things around the basket.

“Scoring 100 points is a little bit misleading because I was really encouraged by the looks and opportunities that Russell was generating for our team and that our team was getting.”

After back-to-back triple-doubles, Westbrook will hope to maintain his electric form against vs the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday (1am UK time/7pm Wednesday CST).
