Arsenal news: Paul Merson makes huge claim ahead of Gunners clash against Tottenham

That is the verdict of Paul Merson, who was previewing the north London derby between and Tottenham at the Emirates on Sunday (2.05pm).

Arsenal warmed up for the highly-anticipated showdown by beating Vorskla Poltava 3-0 in Kiev last night to secure top spot in Group E in the Europa League.

The Gunners are currently on an unbeaten 18-game run under Emery and could leapfrog Spurs into third spot in the Premier League table, but Merson has raised his concerns for his old club.

And the Sky Sports pundit thinks the Gunners should be feeling more pressure.

“This game this weekend is a bigger game for Arsenal than Tottenham, that is how it has swung really,” Merson said on The Debate.

“The pressure is on Arsenal to perform and win the game – if Arsenal do not win this game, you are going to go away from here saying, ‘Tottenham are just getting away from Arsenal.’

“If Tottenham play like they did last weekend against Chelsea, they cannot lose.

“But, that has only been once this season and they have not been great, despite having their best start.

“But they have not played anything like they did the season before.”

Meanwhile, Emery hailed Emile Smith Rowe for his display against Vorska.

He said: “He is taking confidence, he is taking responsibility and also I think today his performance in 90 minutes is very good.

“He is a good example for the other young players.

“We think they can help us but they need the confidence of playing matches, not only working with us in the training sessions.

“They needs to take minutes in matches like today. We want and have the responsibility with the young players like Emile but also the others for them to stay, work and show us that they can improve and stay with us.”
