Carol Kirkwood: BBC reporter reveals REAL reason she won't host Top Gear – 'It's bizarre'

Carol Kirkwood may be a lover of high speed motors, but she has no intentions of signing up to present the BBC’s hit car series Top Gear.

The BBC Breakfast reporter admitted she would like to drive one of the fast vehicles shown on the programme, although she doubts producers would let her.

“I do love fast cars and I’d love to drive them,” the 56-year-old revealed. “But I don’t think they’d let me.”

Speaking about former Top Gear host Chris Evans, she added: “I went to CarFest with Chris and the team, in aid of Children in Need, and it was fantastic.”

Despite her enthusiasm for cars, Carol firmly ruled out hosting the series and told Herald Scotland in 2015: “The high performance cars are so sleek. But no, I haven’t put in my CV for Top Gear.”

When growing up Carol and her seven siblings were taught to drive in a derelict field by her father in the small town of Morar on the west coast of Scotland.

Her parents ran a local hotel and were “quite strict”, making sure their children only watched educational programmes, such as Blue Peter and Newsround on television.

“Blue Peter seemed like such a lot of fun, I wrote to the director general of the BBC to find out what I had to do to become a presenter on it,” Carol said.

“I got a letter back, which said – get a degree, then come back to us. So I did.”

The TV star studied business at Napier College in Edinburgh (now Edinburgh Napier University) then joined the BBC as a production secretary.

“I never did become a Blue Peter presenter but the irony is when I present the weather for BBC Breakfast, I’m standing in the Blue Peter garden to do it,” she laughed.

“In another weird twist of fate, my first job at the BBC was at Elstree studios in London, which is where Strictly is filmed. It’s all very bizarre.”

The meteorologist took part in the thirteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing and was partnered with professional dancer Pasha Kovalev, 38.

Pasha is currently dating Countdown star Rachel Riley, 32. who he met on the BBC dance contest in 2013 when she was a contestant.

Rachel recently revealed she cannot watch her beau dance with other celebrities on the show, as it makes her feel “nervous”.

When asked if she was able to watch the programme while Pasha is taking part, she told Radio Times magazine: “It’s kind of left its mark.

“It just makes me feel nervous – so I make myself busy when it’s on. I leave Pasha to it!”

However, Rachel has no problem tuning into her own show, Countdown, once in a while and said: “I like to see how the clothes come over on screen, because they look completely different.

“I do still like watching the numbers game. Sometimes the ‘TV me’ beats the ‘home me’, then it’s like, ‘All right, well done’.”

“But if I’ve missed something while filming, it’s, ‘Oh, you idiot. How did you miss that?’”
