Steve Bruce sack: Aston Villa HITS BACK after CABBAGE thrown at him as exit threat looms

Aston Villa looked on course for victory at half time but were forced to rescue a point in injury time against relegation-threatened Preston.

Glenn Whelan then missed a penalty with almost the last kick of the game to condemn Villa to another winless performance.

And the result came after a freak fan protest at Villa Park.

Before kick off a supporter threw a cabbage at Bruce – seemingly out of protest over Villa’s slump in form.

Bruce opted to stay at in the summer after they missed out on Premier League promotion but the club sit 12th in the Championship – well off the pace of leaders Leeds and Middlesbrough.

Bruce confirmed the cabbage was thrown at him before the game.

“To say it’s disappointing is an understatement for a club like this,” Bruce said.

“It was before we had even started too.

“I find the whole thing hugely disrespectful. Unfortunately, it sums up the society we are in at the moment. There’s no respect for anyone.

“Certainly for someone like the bloke who is being questioned…I’m surprised he knew what a cabbage was.”

A Twitter account ‘@AstonCabbage’ has already been created.

It tweeted: “I was thrown near the bench and Bruce asked me if I could play CB”

Bruce may now have just one game to save his job, with Villa’s owners potentially using the upcoming international break to ring the changes.

Asked about his own future, the boss said: “That’s for others to decide. You need results.

“The one thing I’ve always had is the determination to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in. I’ll always have a go. But this has been building since the defeat at Sheffield United.

“That’s what I’m up against at the moment. I will battle on. That’s always been my philosophy until told otherwise.”

Villa play at Millwall on Saturday (3pm), knowing defeat would drag them further away from the promotion places.
