What is Cross-play on the Nintendo Switch and how does it work?

Fortnite players now have a wealth of options to play the popular battle royale game, thanks to Nintendo launching a version of the game on their platform.

The on-the-go console lets players take their Fortnite games out into the world with them, playing on their commute, or out of the comfort of their living room with friends across the internet.

One of the biggest new additions to Fortnite is the inclusion of cross-play, a feature that lets players connect across platforms and consoles to compete.

Nintendo Switch has joined the likes of Microsoft, Apple and Epic Games to combine the player base for cross-platform gaming, connecting players from different consoles into the same matches.

Cross-play between consoles has always been a sensitive subject, with both Microsoft and Sony being cautious of allowing gamers to connect between consoles.

However, given the growing popularity over Fortnite, Nintendo and Epic Games decided to collaborate.

Sony is the only company to have blocked the new initiative, stopping PS4 players from connecting to gamers from some other platforms.

The game company has been quiet over the reasons for this, though they cite a “protection of their community” as a driving factor.

A spokeswoman for Sony said: “We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. With… more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles.

“We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms. We have nothing further to add beyond this at this point.”

Fortnite was recently announced to be making its way to Android devices in the summer, adding the last available device for players to battle their way through Fortnite.
