Stop ATTACKING our tourists! Hotels threaten legal action at Ibiza and Majorca crackdown

The Hotel Federation of Ibiza and Formentera says the move would reduce competitiveness and they doubt whether it is legal to do so.

They have slammed the proposal as “a new twist of regulation” and warn they will go to court to seek compensation for damages as it is “an unacceptable measure”.

“You cannot restrict the freedom of some companies to favour others,” say the hoteliers who feel limiting free alcohol to meal-times only in all-inclusive hotels in Ibiza and Mallorca would “deprive customers of a commercial option” much favoured by families.

The Federation also claims that tourists intent on getting drunk mostly drink elsewhere and curbing the flow of alcohol in all-inclusives will not be the solution.

Hoteliers believe the current format of all-inclusives has worked well in recent seasons so to restrict alcohol would be a double whammy bearing in mind that the tourist tax has just doubled this season.

“Doubling this tax is a disregard to our holidaymakers and all the industry, businessmen and workers of the Balearic Islands. The staff of our receptions are mute when they ask where their money goes,” says the Federation which is calling for the tax to be scrapped in 2019.

Tourism chiefs are currently working on the new restrictions for all-inclusive hotels which are being blamed for anti-social drunken behaviour and so-called “uncivic tourism”.

If implemented, any guest staying in an all-inclusive hotel who wants a drink ANYWHERE on the complex will have to be served by a waiter and, if it is outside the dining room at lunch or during evening meals, will be required to pay.

This waiter-only service applies to the dining room and anywhere in the hotel complex at any time of the day. Guests will literally have to summon a waiter, place their order, wait for the drinks and then pay the bill (unless eating in the restaurant).

There will be no free access to beers or alcoholic drinks in fridges

The new proposals have yet to be formally presented so no timescale is known for the booze crackdown though it is unlikely to be this summer.
