Tiger Woods reveals ‘ODD’ Ryder Cup conversation with US captain Jim Furyk

But Tiger Woods admits the conversations have often turned “odd” by having talk about himself in third person.

The 42-year-old proved once and for all that he is back among the world’s best players at the PGA Championship earlier this month, finishing second and just two shots behind winner Brooks Koepka.

Woods had the crowd in the palm of his hand all and put in a career-best final round performance of 64 to roll back the years.

Despite an extraordinary return to form in 2018, he still missed out on an automatic spot for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

However, he is odds-on to be selected as one of four captain’s picks with Furyk set to reveal three on September 4 before announcing his 12th player on September 10.

Woods, currently a vice-captain for Fury’s US team, admits he is in an “odd” situation as he attempts to remain impartial.

But the 14-time major winner insists his main focus is trying to make the team as a player.

“I want to be picked, I want to be part of the time,” Woods said.

“The interesting role here is that I’m a vice-captain so we’re talking about myself in the third person a lot.

“That’s one of the more interesting conversations we’re having. We’re having a lot of fun with it.

“I’m one of the guys on the shortlist and sometimes I’ve got to pull myself out of there and talk about myself in the third person which is a little odd.

When Woods returned to the Tour at the start of 2018, nobody predicted Woods would have challenged for two majors and return to the world top 30.

But Woods insists making the 2018 Ryder Cup team has been a focus of is ever since the turn of the year.

“I started at the very beginning of the year,” he added.

“I told Jim I want to be part of the team, not just as a vice-captain but as a player.

“I’m very close to making that happen.

“It’s been a long year and that was one of my goals to make that team because to be a part of that team you’ve got to be one of the 12 best players and I’m training towards that.”
