During the festival, Muslims greet each other by saying ‘Eid Mubarak’ which means ‘blessed Eid’ or ‘have a blessed holiday’.

Muslims will visit friends and family to give gifts and cards and share meals.

Eid celebrations begin with attending the Mosque for prayers in order to thank Allah for all the blessings they have received.

There are also community-led celebrations in areas such as parks where Muslims gather to celebrate together.

How do you reply to Eid Mubarak?

One response to being wished Eid Mubarak is to say ‘Kahir Mubarak’ which in turn wishes well on the person who greeted you.

Another response is ‘JazakAllah Khair’ which means thank you but has a literal translation of ‘May Allah reward you with goodness’.

What is Eid al Adha?

The festival commemorates the story of Ibrahim’s willingness to follow Allah’s word by preparing to sacrifice his son.

Instead of his son, God placed a goat for sacrifice to reward Ibrahim for his obedience.

To represent this, Muslims around the world will sacrifice animals such as cows, goats, lambs and sheep.

For those in the UK, the sacrifice must take place in an authorised abattoir.

The meat from the sacrifice is shared three ways, one portion for the needy, one for family and friends and one portion for their immediate family.

Many Eid menus include a dish made with the sacrificial meat, as per tradition.

The exact date of Eid al-Adha is determined by the sighting of the moon, as the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle.

Last year, Eid al-Adha fell on August 31, ten days later than this year.

Eid al-Adha falls in the last month of the Islamic calendar – Duh al Hijjah.
