Sony Xperia Android 9 Pie release news as upgrade date announced

Android 9 Pie has already launched but is currently only available on Google Pixel devices in addition to the Essential Phone.

Android updates are renowned for their staggered releases with some phones having to wait months in the past to take advantage of the latest and greatest.

But during its unveiling of Android 9 Pie Google appeared determined to deliver the new software to as many phones as possible quicker than ever.

The tech giant said: “Devices that participated in the Beta program from Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and Essential, as well as all qualifying Android One devices, will receive this update by the end of this fall.

“We’re also working with a number of other partners to launch or upgrade devices to Android 9 this year.”

Shortly after making such claims, HTC announced its smartphones would be getting the new update.

It said: “We’re pleased as pie to confirm updates to Android Pie for the HTC U12+, U11+, U11, and U11 life (Android One). Timeframes for rollout will be announced in due course.

“We can’t wait to know what you think of Google’s freshest slice of Android!”

But now a range of Sony Xperia models have also been confirmed to be receiving the software.

The Japanese tech giant insisted anyone with an Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will get Android 9 Pie in November.

Sony said: “Google has unveiled Android 9 Pie, meaning every Xperia owner will be wondering: when can I get my hands on it?

“The good news is: you won’t have to wait too long to get the brand-new version of Android on your Xperia device.

“Our Premium-range models are expected to have the upgrade available from November, meaning owners of the Xperia XZ2, XZ2 Premium, XZ2 Compact, Xperia XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact will be among the first to get their hands on the new tech.”

Unfortunately anyone with XA2, XA2 Ultra and XA2 Plus hardware will have to wait until “early 2019” for Android 9 Pie, the tech giant went on.

Sony also emphasised its engineers are endeavouring to bring the “quickest possible rollout” while maintaining the company’s quality standards.

It continued: “We always aim for the quickest possible upgrade rollout from the time Google makes its announcement to when it reaches your smartphone.

“And it’s essential that Sony engineers have the time to implement all our feature upgrades and test devices to meet our high quality standards.”

Android 9 Pie boasts a wealth of changes set to change the operating system for the better.

In addition to bringing gesture controls that allow users to navigate their device with the flick of a finger, a new mode dubbed Adaptive Battery harnesses machine learning to help increase usage time.
