Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted tougher tests await after opening their new campaign with a comfortable 4-0 win over the Hammers at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah picked up where he left off last term with his 45th goal in 53 appearances for the club, while Sadio Mane maintained his record of scoring in each opening match of the season since his move to Merseyside in 2016.
Daniel Sturridge completed the rout late on by finding the back of the net with his first touch after coming on as a substitute.
The result justified Liverpool’s tag as second-favourites behind defending champions Manchester City but Klopp is refusing to get carried away.
He said: ”West Ham will play for sure a good season but they are not the Uniteds, the Citys.
“We have to be ready week in week out for the challenges.
“This season will be unbelievable hard. We have expectations as well.
“That is already enough to feel completely different before a Premier League game. We cannot test the test before we have a test.
“We know about our expectations and we know there is a really positive atmosphere around us in the pre-season. That is good.”
Liverpool injury news: Who is out?
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is the only long-term absentee after suffering multiple ligament damage to his knee towards the end of last season.
Centre-back Dejan Lovren has aggravated a pelvic issue that he picked up during the World Cup with Croatia and is expected to be out for three weeks.
Fellow defenders Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip both have minor strains and are doubts for this weekend’s trip to Crystal Palace but should be available for the following week.
Liverpool latest news
New Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson’s commanding presence and skill on the ball is boosting the defensive players’ confidence, according to Virgil van Dijk.
The Brazilian made his competitive debut in the Reds’ win over West Ham on Sunday and the 25-year-old impressed as he began his spell in English football with a clean sheet.
“We speak a lot. He’s very vocal and that helps. It helps me and everyone in the backline. I think his presence is very good as well,” Van Dijk said.
“He has a lot of qualities on the ball that help us playing. We’ve worked on it the whole pre-season and we’ll keep building and practising. There’s still a lot to do.
“West Ham was just one game. We can do a lot better in certain moments and it’s just the start. We’re trying to build something.”
