WWE news: AJ Styles makes HUGE CM Punk statement ahead of SummerSlam

Styles won the WWE Championship on November 7, 2017 in Manchester against Jinder Mahal, which means he has been on top of the mountain for over 264 days.

CM Punk won the most esteemed title in professional wrestling on November 20, 2011 from Alberto Del Rio at Survivor Series and lost it 434 days later to The Rock at the Royal Rumble.

Punk holds the longest reign in the WWE’s modern era, which is defined as the the post-Hulk Hogan years.

Styles still has a long way to go to overtake the UFC star but is not too fussed about it right now as he is too busy trying to retain his championship against some of the blue brand’s best.

The Phenomenal One told Noelle Foley of Ringside Collectibles after being asked about whether or not he is looking to break Punk’s record: “Not really.

“I have my sights set on trying to retain the championship, and some of the guys I’m going up against… they’re freaking amazing!

“Rusev, guys coming back like Randy Orton – I guess he’s all better since he’s beating up Jeff Hardy.

“So, yeah, there’s a lot of guys that I will have to compete with hopefully just to retain. These guys are bad dudes.”

CM Punk left WWE in 2014 immediately after the Royal Rumble citing creative differences and health issues.

The Second City Saint then quickly joined UFC but his performances in the Octagon weren’t as impressive as the ones he put together in Vince McMahon’s promotion.

The six-time world champion lost his debut fight at UFC 203 to Mickey Gall who submitted him in two minutes and 18 seconds two years ago.

The former WWE Champion was then defeated by Mike Jackson via unanimous decision in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois at UFC 225.

Styles will defend the WWE Championship at SummerSlam against his old TNA rival Samoa Joe on August 19 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York
