Ten things you never knew about… the Brontës

1. Patrick Brontë, father of the Brontë sisters, changed his surname from Brunty because it sounded too Irish.

2. There were six Brontë children but only Anne, Emily, Charlotte and Branwell survived childhood.

3. Emily Brontë could not find a publisher for Wuthering Heights until she paid £50 for it to be printed. It did not sell well at first.

4. Kate Bush was inspired by Wuthering Heights to write a hit song by that name in 1978. She also has the same July 30 birthday as Emily Brontë.

5. The first book by the Brontë sisters was a collection of poems which sold only three copies.
