Liverpool transfer news: Jurgen Klopp makes Borussia Dortmund admission about Reds

Klopp has already been quite productive in the transfer window this summer, signing four new players for and spending around £170million on strengthening his squad in a bid to mount a title challenge next season.

However, while the Reds have tried to bridge the gap to their rivals Manchester City, the Anfield outfit have seen a number of their top stars leave in recent seasons, including Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez to Barcelona and Raheem Sterling to City.

When Klopp was at Dortmund, he was unable to keep hold of the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze who both joined Bayern Munich.

And the German tactician insists his side are in a similar boat to Dortmund and the onus is on them to retain their best players.

“Years ago I was at Dortmund. If they had let us play for the next four years with the Dortmund team of 2011 we would have won the Champions League at least once,” Klopp told BBC Sport.

“They were 19/20 years old. It was an unbelievable team and we were lucky to bring them all together.

“We have not exactly the same [at Liverpool] but it is similar.

“In the past for Liverpool it was the same situation. Torres, Suarez, Coutinho, Sterling. They were sold.

“That is true. The only thing that means for us now is that we are responsible. We cannot blame anybody. We cannot say ‘he is not there any more’.

“You have to use the quality and don’t rely on individuals to make a difference. Football is not like this.

“City wasn’t champions last season because they had the best players in every position.

“They played outstandingly well and fantastic football. That was the reason.”

Liverpool are up in action against City in the International Champions Cup in the early hours of Thursday morning (1:05am UK time).
