Mr Trump appeared to make a diplomatic breakthrough when he met communist despot Kim for historic talks in Singapore last month.
But international relations experts Gi-Wook Shin and Joyce Lee warned there is no longer a “realistic” chance of North Korea denuclearising.
In a stark warning to Mr Trump, they said the Singapore summit had shored up Kim’s position by legitimising his brutal regime.
The pair told North Korea watchdog 38 North: “Whatever his motivations, Kim Jong-un has already gained the upper hand.
“His vigorous ‘summit diplomacy’ has greatly changed the political dynamics in the region.
“In Singapore, Kim has shown the world that he should not be underestimated, while bringing home a propaganda victory to proclaim him as a ‘world-class’ leader.
“He was also able to persuade Trump to suspend the US-South Korea joint military exercises, assuaging North Korea’s longstanding paranoia.
“The move has already created internal division in South Korea, while pleasing China.
“Even if Kim’s diplomatic success ends here, he can be assured of improved relations with Beijing and Seoul.
“This would make it difficult for them to actively rejoin the US’ maximum pressure campaign, including Trump’s renewed economic sanctions on North Korea, not to mention support US military action.”
The political analysts also suggested Mr Trump’s administration lacked a “coherent strategy” to deal with the Pyongyang regime.
They said: “The US has continuously reiterated its goal to achieve the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation (CVID) of North Korea.
“The Trump administration may still be occupied with the concept of CVID.
“In truth, though, CVID is no longer a realistic goal with North Korea and it is highly unlikely that Kim would accede to such an arrangement.
“We need to face this reality and recognise that denuclearisation will not and cannot be permanent or irreversible as long as there is a desire to reverse it.
“Furthermore, denuclearisation will not by itself put an end to the longstanding North Korean threat to the outside world.”
“Future negotiations with North Korea should focus on not just denuclearisation but also the normalisation of the country.”
After their summit on June 12, Donald Trump said Kim had promised to destroy a major missile engine testing site in North Korea.
It is believed he was referring to the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground in Cholsan County, North Pyongan.
But the White House refused to publicly reveal the timeline for the proposed demolition.
An administration source said at the time: “The US will continue to monitor this site closely as we move forward in our negotiations.”
