Skin cancer symptoms are different depending on the type of cancer occurring.

Early signs of melanoma skin cancer include changes to moles on the skins surface.

“Normal” moles tend to be “round or oval shaped,” according to the NHS, and have a smooth edge.

They also often do not extend beyond six millimetres in diameter.

A cancerous mole on the other hand, or melanoma skin cancer, will look different.

The NHS recommended the ABCDE mole check, to “help you tell the difference between a normal mole and a melanoma”.

A cancerous mole will be:

Asymmetrical – melanomas have two very different halves.

Border – melanomas have a notched or ragged border.

Colours – they will be a mix of two or more colours.

Diameter – a cancerous mole will be larger than six millimetres.

Enlargement or elevation – Mole that has changed size over time is more likely to be a melanoma

“Melanomas can appear anywhere on the body,” continued the NHS, “but they most commonly appear on the back in men and on the legs in women”.

“They can also develop underneath a nail, on the sole of the foot, in the mouth or in the genital areas, but these types of melanoma are rare.”

Cancer Research UK (CRUK) said it is important to find melanomas “early” as this makes them “easier to treat”.

“Moles with three or more different shades of brown or black are particularly likely to be melanoma,” said CRUK describing the symptoms.

“If you have a dark area under a nail that is getting bigger and is not due to an injury you should also see a doctor.

“Looking at pictures of abnormal moles and melanomas may help you to recognised what is not normal.” they continued.

“Remember though, that not normal for you is what counts.”

CRUK continued that you are most likely to get melanoma on the arms or chest if you are a man, and most likely on the legs if you are a woman.

Melanoma cancer is also very rare, but does occur, in the eye.

Its presence causes part of the eye to discolour, indicating the problem.

It may be possible to prevent skin cancer, the most common in the UK, by wearing sun protective clothing.

Finding the right sunscreen and also seeking shelter could also help protect against the cancer.
