Man Utd transfer news: Jose Mourinho faces Cristiano Ronaldo questions after Juve deal

The Manchester United boss opted not to get involved in the race for Ronaldo, leaving Juventus clear to snap him up for £88m.

The Portuguese super star has undergone a medical today and will be unveiled as a Juve player this evening.

But the Manchester Evening News report that Mourinho will be quizzed on Ronaldo’s transfer when he speaks to the press in LA this week.

Ronaldo was believed to favour a move back to Manchester United when considering his Real Madrid future and even claimed he wanted to return the UK in open last summer when embroiled in the tax case.

But he has landed in Turin to complete his move and the MEN claim Mourinho will be asked why United didn’t put themselves in the equation.

Mourinho is due to speak to the media at the UCLA complex this week with United arriving for pre-season.

Mourinho had branded the pursuit of Ronaldo ‘mission impossible’ last summer but now he is set be paraded in black and white.

And despite being 33 he won the Ballon d’Or this season and was only outscored at the World Cup by Golden Boot winner Harry Kane.

Mourinho is believed to prefer a move for Gareth Bale and is waiting on the Wales star’s talks with new Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui before making a move.

Mourinho’s back up option is Chelsea’s Willian while reports today have linked United with Ivan Perisic again after his performances at the World Cup.

United have already signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant but want a centre-back and a wide forward who could deputise for Romelu Lukaku and provide an option from the wings.

And Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon believes the club are making a mistake in selling Ronaldo.

“It’s very sad that they have sold a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s a real pity,” he told Diario AS.

“With what it cost me to sign him, the effort that we made to bring him to Madrid…. Manchester (United) did not want to sell home and it was very difficult.

“And now they have sold him. There isn’t a player who scores 60 goals a year for you and is worth to you €100m.”
