Google has pushed-out an early developer preview of its next version of Android.
Android 9.0, which is currently codenamed P ahead of its official release later in the year, brings a slew of new changes to the operating system.
However, it’s worth noting that since the developer preview is a very early version of the operating system things are likely to change.
One of the headline features in Android P is the in-built support for notch-style displays, like the iPhone X.
Google has included a number of pre-set notches to house the sensors at the top of the edge-to-edge display.
The developer preview will enable app creators to test how their software performs on displays with this design quirk.
An increasing number of smartphone manufacturers are adopting the notch display design, including ASUS, Ulefone, Doogee, and Noa.
Leaked photos of the latest flagship smartphones from Huawei and LG suggest both companies will also ship devices with a notch in the all-screen design.
Another headline design change is the use of rounded corners in the Quick Settings panel and notification dropdown.
Notifications from messaging apps will now include a preview of the last message sent in the conversation – and enable users to send a reply direct from the notification.
iOS includes similar functionality, however, it is triggered by pressure on a 3D Touch display.
Google will suggest appropriate replies to the previous message using machine learning algorithms.
Elsewhere, Android P restricts access to the microphone, camera, and all SensorManager sensors from any apps that are idle and in the background.
Google has also improved Autofill, which should make it easier for password managers and other third-party apps to enter your password.
The Californian search company has shared a video of all the new features included in the first developer preview.
Google is widely-tipped to announce more features during its annual developer conference, Google IO.
