World Darts Championship: Phil Taylor beats Gary Anderson in quarter-final

The Power might be heading into retirement but the way things are going he could bow out as the 17-times world champion.

At 57, and having announced at the start of the year that he would quit the professional game after this William Hill World Darts Championship, did anyone really think it would be possible he could go all the way again?

Of course he is not there yet as he faces shock semi-finallist Welshman Jamie Lewis this evening but Taylor will start as favourite.

Taylor won the coin toss and gave Anderson the darts but The Power quickly broke the throw and took the opening set 3-1.

The Flying Scotsman, who has been suffering with a back problem, did exactly the same to draw the match level as he won the second set 3-2 and the pattern remained as Taylor went back in front 2-1 by winning the third set 3-0 as he looked ready to try to stamp some authority on the match.

Anderson, though, quickly established a 2-0 lead in the fourth set but Taylor came roaring back, taking it to 2-2 and then landing a double eight finish to lead 3-1.

The Power seemed in total as he moved 4-1 in front by taking the next set 3-0, winning it on a checkout of 100.

But Anderson was not finished yet and he reduced the arrears to 4-2 but in the seventh set Taylor put in an amazing finish of 126 on the bull to throw for the match but Anderson came back to win the set for 4-3. Taylor missed two match darts on tops but eventually won it on double 10.
