Huddersfield 1 Stoke 1: David Wagner and Mark Hughes denied penalty

Stoke manager Hughes was furious with referee Anthony Taylor for rejecting Diouf’s appeals after Huddersfield defender Christopher Schindler had sent him tumbling inside the area with just under 20 minutes to go.

It came moments after Terriers midfielder Aaron Mooy had seen a penalty claim of his own rejected after being wrestled to the floor by Joe Allen, Stoke’s outstanding player.

Hughes felt that only his side should have been awarded a spot-kick, but Wagner believed they were both penalties.

The Huddersfield head coach said: “We have to get the penalty. I have seen the footage. It was a clear penalty.

“I haven’t seen the Stoke situation on video but I saw it from my standpoint and I thought this was a penalty maybe as well. We have seen situations where two penalties weren’t given.”

Hughes insisted he felt aggrieved afterwards, but his side look as if they are turning the corner after picking up four points in two Christmas games.

Ramadan Sobhi tapped in an equaliser from Allen’s cross after an hour, cancelling out Tom Ince’s first goal for Huddersfield, courtesy of Collin Quaner’s cutback.

The Stoke boss is not completely safe, with only two wins from 10 Premier League matches, but at least the calls for his sacking from the stands seem to have quietened down.

But he was still angry with referee Taylor for not giving him the break that could have won Stoke the game.

Hughes said: “We feel a little bit aggrieved, because it was a clear penalty, when Mame Diouf just got his legs taken away from him. The referee needs to give it.

“Whether the referee was influenced because the home crowd seem to think there was a foul by Joe Allen on the lad Mooy, I don’t know.

“I’ve looked at that, and I don’t think their lad was ever in possession of the ball, and Joe was just shepherding the ball away from danger. So that was never a penalty.”

Hughes is facing a central defensive crisis for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea after Ryan Shawcross limped off in the first half at Huddersfield.

Bruno Martins Indi is still recovering from a groin injury, and Kurt Zouma will be ineligible because he is on loan from Stamford Bridge. “We’re a bit short at the moment,” Hughes admitted.
