Melbourne car SHOCK footage: Horrifying moment SUV accelerates into Melbourne pedestrians

The white SUV drove through dozens of pedestrians outside Melbourne’s main train station at 4.40pm ACT (5.40am GMT).

Officials have confirmed 19 people were injured following the incident, with four sustaining critical injuries after the white SUV ploughed into pedestrians.

Among the injured was a preschool-aged child who suffered a serious head injury, but is believed to be in a stable condition. Four people are believed to have sustained critical injuries.

In the footage from 7News, the vehicle can be seen accelerating before it hits the crowd of people.

Dozens of people can also be seen crossing the road before they were struck by the car.

Two people, one of which was driving the vehicle, have since been arrested.

Commissioner Patton said: “At this time we do not have any evidence for any intelligence to indicate there is a connection with terrorism.

“Having said that, however, we continue to support this investigation without counterterrorism command to ensure that there isn’t that connection and that there is no ongoing threat.

“I think to describe this as a lone wolf incident is not probably not apt. This is a horrific incident where a person drove directly at pedestrians.

“It is a crime and we will be fully exploring that… as I have said earlier, one of the key aspects we are exploring is in respect to mental health backgrounds and drug use in respect of this individual. We will work through that and see if there are any learnings.”

Commander Russell Barrett said: “At this stage, we believe that it is a deliberate act.”

One woman who saw the horrific incident unfold said that she heard screams and saw “people flying everywhere”.

Another witness, Lachlan Read told the Herald Sun: “He has gone straight through the red light at pace and it was bang, bang, bang.

“It was just one after the other. The last bang the car stopped. There were bodies on the ground and people running up to them — it was mayhem.

“It is definitely something you don’t expect to see on Flinders St.”
