The comedian, who is best known for roles in The Young Ones and Bottom, starred as Captain Peavey – one of General Hux’s First Order officers.
After seeing Edmondson in the latest Star Wars instalment, fans flocked to Twitter to voice their disbelief.
One fan tweeted: “So I just saw The Last Jedi and I have two words: ADE EDMONDSON.”
Another said: “No one seems to have mentioned Ade Edmondson as Hux’s First Order mate.
“As they decided to go full on sitcom character with Hux, a lot of the time it felt like I was watching a Young Ones/Bottom homage.”
After sending the internet into meltdown, Edmondson joked: “It’s true I have crossed over to the Dark Side, but if your uniform was that tight, you’d be pretty bloody cross too!”
Who is Ade Edmondson?
Born in Bradford in 1957, Edmondson spent his childhood in a variety of exotic locations including Cyprus, Bahrain and Uganda.
After attending a strict public school in Yorkshire, he started studying drama at the University of Manchester.
It was here that he met friend and comedy partner Rik Mayall who died in 2014.
Twitter user Kevin Judge said: “Ade Edmondson was a stand out in The Last Jedi but the real disappointment hitting home is that we could have had Rik Mayall in a Star Wars film.”
Edmondson burst onto British screens in the early 1980s when he played Vyvyan Basterd in The Young Ones and Edward Hitler in Bottom 10 years later.
He has recently starred in ITV’s Bancroft but has stated a return to comedy is unlikely.
Speaking to the Daily Express in 2010, he said: “I enjoyed my time doing comedy but I’ve just had enough.”
Edmondson has a number of acting jobs in the pipeline and will next year star in Save Me and The Rizen 2, according to IMDb.
As well as acting, Edmondson is a talented musician. He has started a number of bands over his career including Bad News, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and The Bad Shepherds.
He is currently married to fellow comic Jennifer Saunders and the pair have three daughters: Ella, Beattie and Freya.
