Mount Agung has prompted shock warnings, with the volcano alter level raised to 4 – the highest possible – as eruption appears imminent.
The Bali volcano eruption could be “drawn out over days and weeks”, according to David Pyle, Professor in Earth Sciences, at the University of Oxford.
The Mount Agung eruption could, however, “escalate” as disruption continues to wreak havoc on Bali.
Professor Pyle told Sky News: “My instinct is that it’ll be drawn out over days and weeks.

“We really only have one example to look at, that is what happened in 1963 and that 1963 eruption started in very much the same way with episodes of ash emission and a lava flow – after three to four weeks, then the eruption escalated.
“I think at the moment it is a watching game. There are scientists on the ground, we are doing everything we can to monitor what is happening. The agencies on the ground are helping people to come out that 10-12km exclusion zone.
“But, really it’s is going to be a waiting game. The volcano is erupting, it’s very disruptive at the moment, with the ash cloud and mud flows. But, there is still a prospect the eruption could escalate.”
Other experts have warned people to expect an eruption from Mount Agung “in hours”.
The Bali volcano could be on the brink of violently exploding, according to Indonesian volcanologist Gede Suantika.
A massive 30-minute terror deep inside Moung Agung’s crater could be a sign of lava trying to breach the surface.
He said: “It means there is a quite big amount of volcanic material that will come out.
“There are two possibilities of how it will come out. First, the magma will fill the crater and flow out or it will come out as an explosion.
“Now, the magma flow is continuous. I am just scared that this will happen soon and come out at once in a big explosion.”
He added: “Soon – I cannot be sure. But maybe in hours, not days, because it’s already erupting. We are just waiting for the big one.”
