9.50am: Mugabe has no plans to leave Zimbabwe

Mugabe wants to die in his home country and has no plans to go into exile, according to a source close to negotiations over resignation.

“It was very emotional for him and he was forceful about it,” said the source, who is not authorised to speak on the details of the negotiated settlement.

“For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country…although that will not stop him from travelling abroad when he wants to or has to.” 

9.40am: Mugabe granted immunity and protection for resigning 

Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution and assured that his safety would be protected in his home country as part of a deal that led to his resignation, sources close to the negotiations said on Thursday.

7.30pm: Mnangagwa declares: ‘The people have spoken’

In a speech outside the ZANU-PF party’s offices in Harare, Mnangagwa said: “The people have spoken. The voice of the people is the voice of God.

“Today we are witnessing the beginning of a new and unfolding democracy.

“We want to grow our economy, we want peace in our country, we want jobs, jobs, jobs. The will of the people will always, always succeed.”

3pm: Mnangagwa arrives back in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s next president Mnangagwa has arrived back in Zimbabwe today.

Mnangagwa, nicknamed The Crocodile, travelled to State House where he was greeted by and briefed by government officials. 

1.22pm: Mnangagwa meets South African president

Mnangagwa was photographed smiling and shaking hands with South African president Jacob Zuma, who was an ally of Mugabe.
