Brigitte Macron says Harvey Weinstein sex scandal was ‘blessing in disguise’

She said: “I’m very happy to see that women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted are speaking up and sharing their stories. Maybe (the sex scandal) was a blessing in disguise.

“All I can say is this: enough! Women have realised that they have the power and freedom to speak out, and that’s the best thing that could happen. Women are breaking the silence (around sexual assault and harassment), which is great.”

The producer’s career, which spanned decades, came to an abrupt end earlier this month after the New York Times published a damning story detailing the allegations of assault.

Mr Weinstein, whose reputation as one of the most powerful movie moguls in Hollywood made him virtually untouchable, now faces a torrent of sexual assault allegations.

More than two dozen women, including American actress Angelina Jolie and French actress Léa Seydoux, a former Bond girl, claim to have been sexually assaulted or harassed by the 65-year-old, while another three women have accused him of rape.

Mr Weinstein has since been fired from his own company and kicked out of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences over the sexual harassment claims.

France has also bitterly condemned his behaviour.

On Monday, president Emmanuel Macron announced that he had “taken the steps” to strip Mr Weinstein of his Legion of Honour, the country’s highest civilian decoration.
