Melania Trump v Ivana: Donald’s feuding model wives are more similar than you think

Melania Trump, 47, and Ivana Trump, 68, have both been married to, and had children with, the same man – Donald Trump, President of the United States.

While Ivana divorced Donald after fifteen years of marriage, Melania is still happily married to the President, who she married in 2005 in a lavish ceremony.

Ivana and Donald share three children, Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump, all of whom are in their 30s, while Melania and Donald have one son, 11-year-old Barron.

Melania issued an official statement on October 11, dubbing Ivana “attention-seeking”.

The whole statement said: “Mrs. Trump has made the White House a home for Barron and the President. She loves living in Washington, DC, and is honoured by her role as first lady of the United States. 

“She plans to use her title and role to help children, not sell books.

“There is clearly no substance to this statement from an ex, this is unfortunately only attention-seeking and self-serving noise.”

This came as a response to Ivana, who said about her former-husband: “I (do not) really want to call him there because Melania is there and I don’t want to cause any kind of jealously or something like that because I’m basically first trump wife. OK? I’m first lady.”

However, despite their current spat, the two women have rather a lot in common.

Communist backgrounds

Both women grew up in countries under communism. Ivana was raised in  Czechoslovakia, leaving the country in 1973, before it was officially split into separate nations. Between 1948 and 1989 the country was ruled by the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. She was even a part of the ski team for Czechoslovakia in the 1972 Winter Olympics.  

During last year’s US election, Ivana said of Bernie Sanders: “(He)  is a communist. I was born in a communist country, so I know when I see them or hear them.”

Melania also grew up under communism, in Slovenia. Her father, Viktor Knavs, was a member of the communist party, and signed up under former Yugoslavian dictator Marshal Tito.

Fashion models

Unsurprisingly, the two beautiful women both worked at fashion models in their early years.

Melania has had the more prolific modelling career of the two, having worked for fashion houses in Paris and Milan. She was scouted in 1995 by Donald Trump’s friend Metropolitan Models co-owner Paolo Zampolli, who encouraged her to move to the States, inadvertently setting her on the path to meet his friend, her future husband.

Melania modelled in Marie Claire, but her career really took off after she met Donald, after which she appeared in In Style Weddings, New York Magazine, Avenue, Philadelphia Style, Vanity Fair, Vogue, and the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. 

Ivana began modelling in Canada after she moved there in 1973. She modelled for fur companies, as well as Eaton’s department store and designer Auckie Sanft.

Linguists 

Both women are impressively multi-lingual.  Ivana speaks five languages including English, Czech, and Russian.

Melania, in addition to her native language, Slovenian, speaks English, French, German, and Serbian. 

The feud between the two women is alive and well recently.

Ivana said on the Wendy William’s Show today: “I tell you, I’m technically first lady Trump.

“I was first wife. I don’t know what is Melania’s problem. She just have to get over it. She is first lady of America, but I’m first lady Trump, excuse me, and have three grown-up kids.”
