Diet plan: Eat THIS for breakfast to lose over a STONE in 12 weeks, experts find

A diet for weight loss is supposed to include a healthy breakfast, but one type of protein can promise fast results, experts have claimed.

If you want to shed the pounds quick tuck into foods that contain whey – a very specific form of protein.

Test subjects who ate this protein for breakfast lost 7.6kg or 1 stone and 3lbs in only 12 weeks.

Dairy foods are usually high in whey, but especially milk, ricotta cheese, yoghurt and other forms of cheese – so dairy lovers rejoice.

The study was carried out at Tel Aviv University, and researchers found that the protein also helped to keep blood sugar down.

Forty-eight overweight people ate protein for breakfast everyday in diets that were identical in terms of the calories they provided.

However, they were split into three groups that ate three different breakfasts.

The first group had whey protein, the second ate proteins like tuna and eggs, and the third group stuck to a carbohydrate-based breakfast.

While the whey protein group lost over a stone in 12 weeks, the group that ate another type of protein lost albs – still a fairly good result.

Those who carbohydrates for breakfast lost much less, and were almost 5lbs lighter.

Dr Daniela Jakubowicz, professor of medicine at Tel Aviv University, explained: “The whey protein diet significantly suppresses the hunger hormone ‘ghrelin’.

“A whey protein drink is easily prepared and provides the advantages [conferred by] a high-protein breakfast on weight loss, reduction of hunger, glucose spikes and HbA1c [glycated haemoglobin, high levels of which are linked to diabetes].”

But weight loss is about more than what you eat, when you eat is also important.

A study from the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, University of Missouri found that those who eat breakfast are less likely to be obese.

Their hunger was also reduced on a daily basis – meaning it was easier to lose weight.

They test specified that subjects must eat a high-protein breakfast between 6:00 am and 9:45 am to feel the benefits of the early morning meal.
