Inside Donald Trump’s head: President promises deal with Democrats as ‘part of wider plan’

The President came under fire in September when he met with key opposition figures to strike a deal on the future of so-called Dreamers – children brought to the US with parents who entered the country illegally.

The agreement was panned by hard-liners in his own party, who were concerned pictures of the President smiling and shaking hands with opposition leader Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office would alienate his core supporters.

But Mr Trump has now revealed the meeting was part of a plan to create “multiple bidders” which he says will give him options on how to turn his election pledges in to law.

His wide-ranging agenda includes tax reform, immigration and a massive overhaul of the US health system.

he President’s Republican party has only a slim majority in Congress and he has repeatedly branded the opposition “obstructionists” because of their continued refusal to vote for any of his landmark bills.

But an interview with business magazine Forbes, the billionaire property mogul revealed his recent bipartisan dealings with key Democrats is part of a plan to create “multiple bidders” for his legislative agenda.

Referring to his planned replacement for Obamacare, Mr Trump said: “I think the Democrats want to make a deal.

“At the same time, I think I have a deal with the Republicans.

“So I have the best of both worlds.

“That’s business to a certain extent… I’m very able to make deals with Democrats if I have to.”

He also admitted he had used a similar trick learned from his long business career when negotiating terms for his recently announced tax reform.

Mr Trump says his radical overhaul of America’s tax code – which he described as “ridiculously complex” – would include “significant” tax cuts and ultimately lead to more cash in the pockets of individuals and businesses.

A core aspect of his plans is to slash the top rate of corporation tax from its current 35 per cent to 20 per cent. The average top rate worldwide is 22.5 per cent.

In his interview with Forbes, the President revealed he had initially started by demanding a lower rate to help achieve the one he actually wanted.

He said: ”I was actually saying 15 [per cent] for the purpose of getting to 20 [per cent],”

“As you know, this will be a negotiation for the next 30 days. But I wanted the 15 in order to get to 20.”

He also revealed plans for an “economic development” bill which would provide incentives for companies to keep their operations in the US.

The proposals would penalise firms which move manufacturing and jobs overseas.

He said: ”It’s both a carrot and a stick.

“It is an incentive to stay. But it is perhaps even more so — if you leave, it’s going to be very tough for you to think that you’re going to be able to sell your product back into our country.”
