Hurricane Nate video: Storm batters Alabama coast as killer storm hits US

A video uploaded to Twitter The Weather Channel’s Steve Petyerak show trees violently sway as the storm lashes the coast of Orange Beach, Alabama.

Earlier the city’s mayor Tony Kennon warned residents of Orange Beach to evacuate in preparation for the storm.

Hurricane Nate is travelling north at 85 mph according to the NOAA National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Neighbouring sate Mississippi has also been hit by the brunt of Nate as it heads along the coast.

The mayor of Biloxi – who are currently experiencing severe flooding – Andrew Gilich said: “The storm surge is a big thing that really traps everyone.”

He went onto add that he hopes Nate’s direction and predicted speed “ease the blow.”

NHC said Nate first made landfall near the mouth of the Mississippi River at around 8pm on Saturday before it headed towards to Mississippi coast.

Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and parts of Florida issued warnings and evacuations earlier after Nate killed at least 25 people in central America.

The Category 1 Hurricane began battering the US mainland on Saturday night.

Despite the storm’s low category, officials have stressed the importance of safety.

It is the third Hurricane to hit the US mainland in the past six weeks.

Although Hurricane Nate is not set to be as strong as last month’s Maria and Irma, it could still cause mass devastation.

A hurricane warning was in effect for coastal areas in Louisiana and Mississippi after Nate forced people to evacuate.

President Trump’s declaration authorised the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate all disaster relief work.

A statement from The White House said: “Trump declared that an emergency exists in the State of Mississippi and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State, tribal and local response efforts.

“This action will help alleviate the hardship and suffering that the emergency may inflict on the local population.”

Amos Cormier, president of Plaquemines Parish, told Reuters “while it appears we’re being spared … our hearts go out to Mississippi,”

The 10pm CDT update from the NHC located the eye of Hurricane Nate at around 35miles (60km) south-southwest of Biloxi, in Mississippi and 60miles (95km) east of New Orleans, in Louisiana.

Donald Trump tweeted: “Hurricane Nate made landfall on the Gulf Coast! Do they know how much they’re gonna screw up the budget? I’m loading up the paper towels!”
