Carrey was being interviewed on the US show Norm MacDonald Live when he dropped the bombshell about the terrible way he was treated by his fellow actor on the set of the 1995 movie.
Tommy Lee Jones has perfected his grumpy on-screen persona but it seems he can be pretty caustic off-screen too.
Carrey played the Riddler in the movie, with Jones slightly out of his usual comfort zone as Harvey Dent, who becomes the crazed Two-Face.
The role was almost perfect type-casting for the typically manic Carey, but his style of acting was not at all pleasing to his unimpressed co-star.
Carrey recalled that he was in a restaurant when his friend pointed out that Jones was there too and that they were about to star together on screen.
It all went downhill from there.
Carrey said: “I went over and said, ‘Hey, Tommy, how you doing?’ And the blood just drained from his face like he had been thinking about me 24 hours a day.”
“It was before the biggest scene we have together in the movie. The blood just drained from his face. He started shaking and he got up and… he must have been in mid-kill-me fantasy or something.”
“He went to hug me and said,‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ I said, ‘Gee man, what’s the problem?’ I pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.’”
Despite the outright insult in such a public place, Carrey still chooses to seek a less bitter explanation.
When Norm suggested that maybe Jones hated being upstaged, Carrey said: “He might have been uncomfortable doing that work, too. That’s not really his style of stuff.”
