Rare coins: Do you have the 1p coin worth £50 in your wallet?

Rare coins can be worth a huge sum, and collectors go for many years looking out for that perfect coin to complete the collection.

While £1 coins, £2 coins an 50p coins are the ones tend to be lost valuable, the humble 2p and 1p pieces can also be worth a pretty penny. Oxfam are currently selling a rare 1971 new penny, which has a very special place in British history.

Although not originally rare, now these pennies are difficult to come by.

They were the first pennies to be introduced to the UK after decimalisation.

Decimalisation was the process undertaken when UK switched from using old currency to the system used today.

The penny was also divided into four farthings. However, Britain abandoned this method in 1971, instead using pounds divided into 100 pennies. This bronze coin is one of the first of the new pennies, and has ‘New Penny’ embossed on its side.

It features the second portrait of the Queen to appear on a coin, and she is wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

The lettering around the side reads: “D·G·REG·F·D·1971 ELIZABETH·II”.

It is unknown how many of these pennies still exist, however as of 31 March 2014 there were an estimated 11,278 million 1p coins in circulation, so this piece may be hard to track down.

The value potential of 1p coins should not be underestimated. An old penny from 1933 has sold for £72,000 online.  This is because only seven pennies were made with this date.

Another coin that is selling online for up to £3,000 is one of five million 50p coins.

The rarest 50p coin in the Kew Gardens design, according to some sources. The 2009 coin was designed by Christopher Le Brun and 210,000 were mind – making the coin very scarce.

There were an estimated 948 million 50p coins in circulation, as of March 2014. However, there is one coin that is going for far more than the Kew Gardens coin on Ebay currently.

A rare 50p coin to commemorate the Battle of Hastings is selling for up to £3,000 on Ebay – an enormous sum. The stunning coin went into circulation in November 2016.

The coin features a design from the famous Bayeux tapestry. The historic piece of art charts the events leading up to the battle in 1066.
