German elections: Martin Schulz BASHES Brussels for taking Germany’s money to DO NOTHING

The former European Parliament president attacked the European Union for failing to meet the needs of its member states.

Presenting the SPD manifesto ahead of Sunday’s election, Mr Schulz said: “Right now the budgetary framework is €907billion (£798billion) and the biggest contributor is Germany.

“We need to say: you’re getting billions for infrastructure, economic development, and agriculture but you’re not taking in a single refugee.

Since resigning as head of the only directly-elected branch of the European structure, Mr Schulz has become increasingly critical of Brussels and its behaviour towards member states.

In particular, the contender to Angela Merkel‘s chancellor position in the Bundestag has harshly reprimanded the European Union for failing to produce a successful policy to resolve the migrant crisis that has been sweeping over Europe for over three years.

Mr Schulz told the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle: “We need to agree on a fair distribution of refugees and fair financial support for taking them in.

“Poland and a few other countries are willing to go along sanctions against Russia because they are threatened by Russia. That’s solidarity.

“When it’s about long-term economic development, solidarity is not a problem. Sanctions: if it’s billions, it’s yes, please! Refugees? No, thank you!”

Southern European countries such as Italy have been complaining about Brussels‘ failure to support them in resettling refugees throughout the EU or deporting them back to their countries.

In 2015, Chancellor Merkel adopted an open-door policy that saw nearly one million refugees being resettled in Germany.

Mrs Merkel recently ruled out setting an upper limit on refugees coming to Germany despite growing dissent from voters about the lack of an intake limit.

The chancellor has been repeatedly met with booing and whistles from demonstrators during her electoral campaign.
