Mexico earthquake: Remarkable moment school children are rescued from rubble

In unverified footage of the Mexico earthquake, children can be seen being rescued from a crumbling building after the deadly tremors shook the nation.

Children can be heard screaming as they are trapped between concrete slabs in Mexico City.

One child was lifted away from the rubble. Another distressed youngster begins crying as he is pulled to safety.

The footage was posted online as Mexico’s President said 22 people died at a primary school in the south of the city that collapsed in the country’s capital after the devastating 7.1 magnitude quake.

It is not known if the footage is from the school which killed at least 22 people.

President Enrique Pena Nieto also confirmed that another 38 people were missing at the school building.

It is unclear whether the deaths at the school are including in the current death toll from the earthquake of at least 216 people.

The earthquake comes just days after Mexico was hit by an 8.1 magnitude tremor, the biggest to hit Mexico in a century, killing at least 98 people.

The city and its surrounding area are home to about 20 million people.

In another piece of footage, students and teachers can be seen rushing out of a university building as the earthquake hit.

Screams can be heard as people quickly rush away from the building to safety as part of the block crumbles to the floor, causing a huge smoke cloud to rise into the air.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit five miles southeast of Atencingo in the state of Puebla, about 100 miles south of Mexico City, at a depth of 32 miles.

The Mexican stock exchange suspended trading following the quake.

US President Donald Trump said on Twitter: “God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you.”

The quake comes on the 32nd anniversary of a 1985 quake which killed 5,000 people and caused serious damage to the Greater Mexico City area.
