Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud reveals THIS would put him off buying a house

Kevin, 58, has met with hundreds of plucky house builders hoping to create their dream home.

Grand Designs has seen its fair share of incredible success stories, but also some notable disasters.

But what would it take for Kevin to not buy a house? Hideous decor? Crumbling walls? Tricky planning permission?

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the TV presenter and designer admitted none of these things would put him off – but there was one non-negotiable for him when house-hunting.

He revealed: “I can’t believe there is a house anywhere on the planet without some redeeming feature.

“Leaky pipes, a roof that is falling in, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter – you can do it up.

“What you can’t change is what it looks over, its exact location, and what it sits on.

“If it is next to a railway line or a motorway, or situated on boggy ground, it is always going to be a problem.”

However, Kevin acknowledged location is often one thing many people are forced to compromise on, and continued: “We build in all kinds of places now because we have to.

“But if you look back, the Romans sited their houses very carefully, always near to fresh water, not high up facing strong winds or right at the bottom of hills where rainwater would drain into them.

“We can’t all live in perfectly located places but what we can do is adapt what we have and make the best of it.”

This is exactly what one couple on last week’s show did, buying a home which was slipping down a hill and rebuilding with a strong steel foundation to keep it stable.

For Kevin himself, when buying homes he looks for properties that offer “privacy and peace and quiet”.

He explained: “For me there has to be an element of sanctuary in a home, and to be able to truly relax in isolation, to have that sense of safety.

“But also on the opposite side, I also consider if there is there a community of people, good neighbours that I can get to know.”

Kevin will be appearing at Grand Designs Live from 11th – 15th October 2017 at NEC Birmingham. Visit www.GrandDesignsLive.co.uk for tickets & more info.
