Donald Trump to plan huge parade to show world US military strength

The US military parade could be held on July 4 next year if it becomes a reality after President Trump brought up the idea while talking to reporters in New York.

The Bastille Day-inspired display could see thousands of military personnel, vehicles and missiles marched down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC.

The Commander-in-chief proposed the idea while talking to journalists alongside his French counterpart who invited him to the Bastille Day parade in Paris earlier this year.

Mr attended the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the United States joining First World War accepting an invitation from President Macron.

The President was impressed by the thousands of marching French and US troops on the Champs-Elysées in the two-hour parade.

Mr Trump said: “I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France.

“And people do not know what great warriors they are in France, but when you see that and you see all the victories, it was a tremendous thing.”

The President continued while gesturing towards Mr Macron: “And, to a large extent, because of what I witnessed, we may do something like that on July Fourth in Washington down Pennsylvania Avenue, if I have your approval.

“I don’t know. We’re gonna have to try and top it, but we had a lot of planes going over and a lot of military might, and it was really a beautiful thing to see.”

The US leader also claimed America was spending £517billion ($700billion) extra on its military – believed to be a reference to the US Senate’s $700billion defence policy bill.

Mr Trump said the extra military spending was good new for France “because we’re friends”.

The former reality TV star confirmed: “I’m speaking with [chief of staff] General [John] Kelly and with all of the people involved, and we will see if it we can do it this year. But we certainly will be beginning to do that.”

French President Macron was in New York ahead of the United Nations General Assembly where China’s Xi Jingping held crisis talks with Mr Trump.

The pair discussed the nuclear threat posed by North Korea during a phone conversation as Mr Xi is not attending the UN meeting.

A White House spokesman said: “The two leaders committed to maximising pressure on North Korea through vigorous enforcement of United Nations Security Council resolutions.”
