White House furious at EU: Brussels official SLAMMED for spreading rumour of Trump U-turn

The White House came out quickly to squash a report yesterday evening that claimed the US was planning on staying inside the infamous climate change accord.

Donald Trump formally announced the US departure from the Paris Accord in June this year, after quitting the deal was a key pledge during his presidential campaign last year.

The US President attacked the climate change agreement, which was signed by Barack Obama two years ago, for killing US jobs.

However, yesterday the EU climate commissioner, Miguel Arias Canete, said the Trump administration had changed their mind and was no longer pulling the US out of the global accord.

Following a meeting of environment ministers on Saturday, Mr Canete said White House officials had indicated the US would stay in the 2015 accord.

He told the Wall Street Journal that the US would not renegotiate the Paris Accord or rip it up, but instead try to review the terms.

The EU official, who is a key ally of Jean-Claude Juncker, added: “It’s a message which is quite different to the one we heard from President Trump in the past.

“There will be a meeting on the sidelines of next week’s UN General Assembly with American representatives to assess what is the real US position.”

Chilean Environment Minister Marcelo Mena also tweeted: “I was in the meeting, and the US negotiator effectively did not close the door on continuing in the agreement, and ruled out looking for a new agreement.”

But the White House promptly responded to insist there had been “no change” in the US position.

According to rumours, officials in the Trump administration were furious at the rumours of the suggested change of policy.

Spokesman Sarah Huckabee said: “As the president has made abundantly clear, the United States is withdrawing unless we can re-enter on terms that are more favourable to our country.”

At the time of his announcement in June, Mr Trump said the decision was part of his “solemn duty to protect America”.

He claimed the agreement would cost the US 6.5 million jobs – while rival economies like China and India were treated more favourably.

The Paris agreement committed the US and 187 other countries around the world to keeping rising global temperatures “well below” 2C above pre-industrial levels and “endeavour to limit” them even more, to 1.5C.

Only Syria and Nicaragua did not sign up to the deal.

The rumour of a shift on the deal comes as Mr Trump hinted during a visit to France in July that the US could return to the deal.
