‘You lack democracy’ Infighting on show as EU chief ATTACKS eurozone leader next to him

Pierre Moscovici, who serves as European Commissioner Economic and Financial Affairs, openly criticised the unaccountability around the single currency

The Frenchman embarassed his European counterparts this morning as he ripped into their handling of the eurozone during an EU meeting in Estonia.

He said that the eurozone amounted to a “democratic scandal” – while standing next to an awkward-looking Jeroen Dijsselbloem, the president of the eurogroup.

Mr Moscovici told the press conference that the group of financial ministers of those in the eurozone had not been held to account.

He said: “My criticism has not been against the leadership of the eurogroup. But about the democratic quality of the eurozone.

“My purpose has been to raise another issue, a broader issue of whether Europe is democratic.

“In my view, with democratic accountability, you have an executive, you have a debate, you have control, and that is not the case of the eurogroup. We have to be honest.”

The Brussels beurocrat added: “I think the answer lies in Juncker’s State of the Union address.

“We need to have a a future eurozone minister controlled by the European Parliament. A euro for all.”

“We all ahve to see that, as far as democracy goes, we can do much much better.

Mr Dijsselbloem, who has led the eurogroup for the past five years, appeared incredibly uncomfortable during the remarks.

The criticism comes as Jean-Claude Juncker revealed plans to actively pursue eurozone expansion to Romania and Bulgaria.
