The IBF, WBA and WBC middleweight champion takes on the Mexican at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Alvarez has a rematch clause in the contract so if he loses the fight then he could trigger an immediate return.
But should Canelo want to take a break if the bout is a brutal war then Golovkin could face WBO middleweight champion Saunders, who faces Willie Monroe Jnr this weekend.
“If the first fight is a barn burner and both guys want to do the rematch then we will see the rematch,” said Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler.
“If GGG wins, and Canelo wants to take some time off then I could see the Saunders fight happening.

“Billy Joe is one of those guys that if he is in shape and motivated for a fight, he’s a terrific fighter.
“Unfortunately he does a lot more talking about fighting GGG than actually signing to fight him.”
Saunders looked set to face Golovkin in Kazakhstan in June but GGG endured a gruelling win against Daniel Jacobs in March.
His team opted out of that clash to instead take a break ahead of this weekend’s clash with Alvarez, which was already being negotiated back in March.
“We came close to doing a fight in Kazakhstan but the Jacobs fight went 12 rounds and it was a physical fight,” said Loeffler.
“There was no way GGG could have fought when we were talking about potentially doing this in September.
“If he does well here, the unification fight has always been a dream of Gennady’s and we would sit down with Frank Warren (Saunders’ promoter) to see if that realistically could be made.”
