Hurricane Irma caused catastrophic damage across the Caribbean where it killed at least 37 people and left thousands homeless.
The Virgin chief was on his Necker Island in the region when Irma struck and survived the Category 5 storm’s 185 mph winds by sheltering in a wine cellar underneath one of his properties.
Sir Richard’s son, Sam, is on his way to the islands with supplies and aid, from nappies and clothes to water purification tablets and tarpaulin for shelter.
Writing on the Virgin blog, Sir Richard’s daughter Holly said: “Hurricane Irma has now passed through the Caribbean and the damage left behind is unimaginable.
“It is truly heart-breaking to see such devastation in a place we call home and to communities we love dearly.”

The hurricane has left apocalyptic scenes across the Caribbean with certain countries “a rubble” according to the prime minister of Barbuda Gaston Browne.
Sharon Flax-Brutus, director of tourism for the BVI, said the damage was difficult to assess because communications were down, but that “many homes are without roofs, or have been diminished to merely foundations”.
On the Virgin blog, Holly also said: “We are already working on a number of ways to get help to those who need it and my family and the Virgin businesses have been inundated with people reaching out to offer help and resources – your compassion has been invaluable and I really can’t thank you enough.”
Sir Richard described the hurricane as “the storm of the century” and has called for an “enormous aid effort” to help people to build their lives.
The Hurricane hit Florida on Saturday where it has left around 6.5 million homes without power.
The Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson is due to fly to the Caribbean later in the wake of the devastating Hurricane Irma.
