Friday September 8: Men’s semi-finals day

17:10: Some tennis at last! The men’s doubles finalists are wandering out onto Arthur Ashe to play the first final of the weekend.

Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romanian will be taking on the Spanish pair of Feliciano Lopez and Marc Lopez for the title won last year by Britain’s own Jamie Murray.

16:00: There’s only an hour to go until the men’s doubles final on Arthur Ashes as the clock has just struck 11am in New York.

But 10 years ago on this day, it was the women who were at the centre of attention.

Justin Henin had been in sparkling form ahead of Flushing Meadows, winning the French Open and reaching the semi-final of Wimbledon.

Despite being the No 1 seed, the Belgian had been handed a testing draw, having to beat Serena Williams in the quarter-finals and sister Venus in the semis.

On September 8 2007, she came up against Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final and produced one of her best performances to sweep the Russian aside 6-1, 6-3.

It was her seventh and would be her last Grand Slam title but when you look at her list of scalps in that second week, it was probably her most impressive.

14:36: We’re getting ready for some top tennis action later this afternoon as the men’s semi-finals take centre stage at the US Open.

But here’s a little update on Roger Federer, who has confirmed he won’t be playing in Beijing or Tokyo later this year.

“My schedule is similar towards the end of the season,” he said.

“Good thing is that I need a rest. I have a rest now, so that’s good. That’s actually the thing when I walked off the court, I was, like, Finally, I can rest.

“Because I’m tired. I put a lot into it. I was not sure I could play, to be honest, so I’m happy I get a rest now. Now I have Laver Cup, Shanghai, Basel, Paris, and London. That’s my schedule, and it won’t change.

“I hope I’m fully recovered and 100% fit when Laver Cup comes around. When that’s over, I hope I’m going to arrive really early in Shanghai to really get ready and make it a priority for me to win that tournament.”

13:00: A bit of tennis news coming off the wires at Express Sport today.

The World Team Cup, a men’s event offering high prize money and ranking points, could begin as soon as January 2019, sources have said following meetings between tennis stake holders in New York this week.

According to two sources familiar with the discussions, there are plans to hold it over 10 days at the start of each year.

12:16: Remember, a new grand slam champion will be crowned at the U.S. Open after Sloane Stephens beat fellow American Venus Williams 6-1 0-6 7-5 in a rollercoaster of a semi-final on Thursday.

Stephens, who returned to competition at Wimbledon after nearly a year off because of a foot injury, recovered from a second-set meltdown to end ninth seed Williams’s hopes of reaching a third major final this year.

Madison Keys is into the US Open final

10:40: CoCo Vandeweghe broke into tears during her post-match press conference after losing to Madison Keys in the US Open semi-finals.

Keys won the all-American semi-final 6-1 6-2 on Arthur Ashe.

The result saw 25-year-old Vandeweghe crash out at the last-four stage of a second Grand Slam this year.

And she was in tears during her press conference after the clash.

“She was playing a great first set,” said Vandeweghe.

“I thought at some point she might start running a little bit colder than what she was doing. I mean, it’s really not over until the last point.

“I was fighting as hard as I could for as long as I could, but she stayed hot the whole time.”

10:05: Speaking ahead of his semi-final with Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro said: “Physically I’m not in the perfect condition, but when you play semi-finals of a grand slam, everything can happen, so you must be ready for the chance,” said Del Potro, whose career has been hampered by injuries and surgeries.

“Playing against Rafa in my favourite tournament, I will try to enjoy the atmosphere and the game.”

10.00: We have reached the last four in the men’s draw with Rafa Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro the main event.

Del Potro won here in 2009 and has already beaten Roger Federer but is struggling with fitness and illness.

Nadal looks in great form but it yet to be really tested yet. He breezed through against young Russian Andrey Rublev but will be in a real match against Del Potro.

It could be a classic.

09.45: And then there were two.

The women’s draw has been whittled down to the final two players with Sloane Stephens to take on Maddison Keys in an all-American final.

Stephens stunned Venus Williams to reach her first Grand Slam final.

And Keys, 22, also reaches her first Grand Slam final after hammering CoCo Vandeweghe.

They meet on Saturday evening on the Arthur Ashe court.
