Hurricane Irma wind speeds mapped: Interactive chart shows storm path and strength

is making its way across the Atlantic Ocean towards the United States, and is set to arrive in Florida on Sunday, September 10.

As a result, authorities in the most southeastern state have begun evacuation procedures as they prepare for one of the strongest hurricanes on record.

A live map, created by web designers Nullschool, shows the sheer strength of Hurricane Irma as it travels across the Atlantic Ocean.

The interactive map shows wind speeds of up to 185mph swirling around the eye of the storm as it hovers over the Caribbean islands but this windspeed is set to become even stronger over the coming days.

When those winds hit mainland, it has the potential to cause widespread destruction.

The map, which is updated every three hours, allows the user to see “current wind, weather, ocean, and pollution conditions, as forecast by supercomputers”, using information from “the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center”.

Hurricane Irma is so strong that it has been setting off seismometers, which are designed to measure earthquakes.

Stephen Hicks, a seismologist at the University of Southampton, said: “What we’re seeing in the seismogram are low-pitched hums that gradually become stronger as the hurricane gets closer to the seismometer on the island of Guadeloupe.

“Earthquakes occur tens of miles deep inside Earth’s crust, a long way from the influence of weather events, and there is no evidence to suggest that hurricanes and storms directly cause earthquakes.”
