Italian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton admits to forest fire driving him to success

Hamilton, who has been in mesmerising form since the sport’s summer break, followed his victory at last week’s race in Belgium with a dominant display at Monza to move three points clear of Sebastian Vettel.

And with only seven rounds remaining, Hamilton’s victory felt like a turning point in this year’s championship battle.

Seventeen points have swung in Hamilton’s favour since the shutdown, while he has won three of the last four races – a run which started at July’s British Grand Prix.

“Silverstone was an empowering weekend, and from then it has sparked a forest fire within me and hopefully that has reflected in my driving,” Hamilton added.

“While I feel like I always drive with my heart, my heart is really the engine, the power and the force behind what I do.

“My mind is like the rudder, and I feel like it has been steering me in the right direction.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff twisted the knife in Ferrari’s wounds after Mercedes had shut them out on their home turf, claiming the Italian team had let their fans down.

“For me, it looks like this weekend Ferrari have taken a step back,” said Wolff after another one-two finish for the ‘Silver Arrows’.

Hamilton’s team-mate Valteri Bottas finished in second, while Vettel could only manage third and fellow Ferrari driver Kimi Raikonen fifth.

“We were very solid, but they (Ferrari] have not performed in the way everybody expected.

“Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo started from the back of the grid and almost finished third, which suggests something is out of synch here and not how it should be.”

Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne admitted: “We just screwed up. The set-up for the car was wrong. We underestimated the circuit.”

But Vettel refused to be downcast, insisting: “It’s a long journey still. I’m full of adrenaline from the podium, the atmosphere was amazing. You can ask whatever you want now, I don’t care. You will always get a positive answer.

“For sure, Mercedes are giving us a very, very hard time, especially at the moment, but we’ll see.

“Overall you could say it was a bad day, but I know the team is on the right way and there is a lot of stuff that is going to improve.

“I am not worried. It was a difficult weekend but I know that there is still a long way to go and we have got the people behind us so it is a great feeling.”
