A medium-range missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii, during a flight test last night.
The target was successfully blasted out of the sky by SM-6 missiles, which were fired rom the USS John Paul Jones, one of the US Navy’s top destroyers.
Missile Defence Agency director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves said: “We are working closely with the fleet to develop this important new capability, and this was a key milestone in giving our Aegis BMD ships an enhanced capability to defeat ballistic missiles in their terminal phase.
“We will continue developing ballistic missile defence technologies to stay ahead of the threat as it evolves.”

The news comes as just 36 hours after North Korea fired another missile into the Sea of Japan, triggering further warnings about the possible outbreak of war.
South Korea’s military said Kim’s regime fired the “unidentified projectile” from Pyongyang towards the sea at 5:57am local time.
The Japanese government’s J-Alert warning system advised people in the area to take precautions.
It passed over Japanese territory at around 6:06am local time before breaking into three pieces, officials in Tokyo said.
President Trump attacked North Korea’s “threatening and destabilising actions” as he reacted to the news yesterday morning.
In a statement released by the White House, President Trump raged: “The world has received North Korea’s latest message loud and clear: this regime has signalled its contempt for its neighbours, for all members of the United Nations, and for minimum standards of acceptable international behaviour.
“Threatening and destabilising actions only increase the North Korean regime’s isolation in the region and among all nations of the world.”
He added: “All options are on the table.”
Following a phone call with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, the two leaders “agreed that North Korea poses a grave and growing direct threat to the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, as well as to countries around the world.”
Mr Trump and Mr Abe also “committed to increasing pressure on North Korea and are doing their utmost to convince the international community to do the same”, according to the White House statement.
