Michael Schumacher latest: son says driving dad’s car was ‘was just great’

The 18-year-old followed in his father’s footsteps on Sunday, doing a lap of honour before the Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps course in a 1994 model of the Benetton B194 his father drove.

Michael Schumacher, who went on to win seven world championships, won his first Grand Prix race at the same track on August 30, 1992 in the same car.

The world champion eventually won a total of 90 other races and is widely seen as one of the greats of F1.

But the F1 ace’s current condition is unknown after he suffered severe head injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma in a skiing accident in 2013.

He came out of the coma and was transferred to his home in Switzerland in September 2014 and cannot walk.

The driver’s lawyer said during a court case against the German magazine Bunte that Schumacher “cannot even stand with the help of his special therapists” and said he could make no further comment on his condition.

Mick Schumacher said that he did not “hesitate for a second and didn’t have any doubts” about doing the lap of honour.

He said: “When I heard the car would drive here, I was straight away on for it and just wanted to do it. I am happy I have done it now.”

Mick told the BBC: “It was just great. It was a pleasure for me to drive and it was emotional and fun and amazing. There is a lot of history with it and I’m really happy I was able to drive it.”

While Mick was only seven when his father retired for the first time at the end of 2006, he is, unsurprisingly, very proud of the achievements of his father.

Mick said: “I learned a lot about it. I always look back and it is just nice to see what he has reached and all his tricks and stuff.”

He wore a special, customised helmet for the event – half in his own colours and half in the ones is father used when racing for the Benetton team.

Mick said: “I guess it’s just good to have both sides on. We still have a big piece of history with it and to be able to put it on my helmet is another step.”
