In the thriller, the actor had to work with the energetic dog – which had to bite his arm.
“Ordinarily it’s a controlled environment,” he said of doing his own stunts.
“But when you’re dealing with a 130lb Rottweiler, it was really terrifying.
“I’m a dog lover as well, but this one was muzzled, and when they got the muzzle off he was ready to go!
“I had a piece of cardboard or something under my jacket as protection.”

He added: “There were a few variables that were making my head spin, and the guy wasn’t speaking the best English as we were shooting in Prague.
“There were definitely variables flying round the back of my mind – what do they say about working with animals and kids – you just never do it!
“But actually it worked really well.”
“It was something that was important to me, but it’s this big moment at the end where he’s wrestling a dog and I wanted it to be a powerful thing.”
The thriller, directed by Michael Apted, also stars Noomi Rapace and Toni Collette, and is about a CIA interrogator lured into a ruse that puts London at risk of a biological attack.
