Macron popularity PLUMMETS: Most voters now unhappy with French president, poll reveals

The poll, conducted by Ifop for newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, shows the French president’s ‘dissatisfaction rating’ has risen to 57 per cent, up 14 per cent compared with last month.

In fact, ’s popularity after four-months in office is lower than any French president over the same time period since 1995.

French government spokesman Christoph Castaner admitted the government is going through a difficult period as Mr Macron tries to push through a series of reforms in quick succession.

Castaner told BFM TV: “Yes, we are encountering difficulties, but you cannot just spend your time only looking at polls when you’re in government.

“We are there to transform the country. Our country needs us to take risks, and we are taking risks.”

Macron’s early tenure has been hit with a series of setbacks including tense parliamentary debates over labour reforms and the resignation of Pierre de Villiers, the armed forces’ chief of staff, who quit over cuts to the defence budget.

His desire to take a more central role in European affairs has also resulted in a decline in relations with some of his neighbours.

Last week, and criticised his lack of political experience as he travelled across the continent trying to gather support for his plans to reform EU labour laws.

His office was also forced to back down on plans to give Macron’s wife Brigitte a formal paid role following a public outcry – and news during his first three months in office did nothing to improve his standing among French voters.

Frédéric Dabi, Deputy Director General of Ifop, said: “The combination of discontent and frustration is blatant and it is measured at impressive levels in all categories of the population.”

Bernard Sananes, head of French polling company Elabe, said the latest survey could encourage Mr Macron’s political opponents after his fledging En Marche! party won a commanding majority in parliament.

Sananes told BFM TV: “It could mean, for the government, that the opposition mobilises itself again.”

Mr Macron’s prime minister Edouard Philippe also lost popularity, with 47 percent of the French expressing satisfaction with him — down nine points from July, according to the IFOP poll.

The bad news isn’t over yet for the 39-year-old leader, with the far-left CGT trade union set to lead a rally next month as they protest plans to deregulate the jobs market.

Ifop surveyed 1,023 adults between August 25-26.
